State Transportation OrganizerAhmad works to expand and deepen the participation of TransForm's regional and state allies in transportation reform efforts. Previously, Ahmad has served as an organizer on Barack Obama's presidential campaign and Gavin Newsom's Lieutenant Governor campaign. Ahmad previously spend time in Sacramento as a Senate Fellow for Senator Elaine Alquist. While living in the DC Metro area, Ahmad developed a passion for public transit and walkable communities and is excited to bring that experience to California. Ahmad graduated from San Jose State University with a B.A. in Political Science in 2005, and from The George Washington University with a M.P.S. in Political Management in 2009.

Administrative AssistantAna Lua helps keep TransForm running by working behind the scenes in her role as administrative assistant. Prior to TransForm she worked for environmental and advocacy nonprofits in the Bay Area and her native Massachusetts. Ana Lua also has a passion for youth organizing and empowerment. Her favorite mode of transportation is her own two feet, and she loves living car-free. You can find her exploring the Bay’s amazing arts and organizing scenes, hiking, and enjoying time with friends and family.

Transportation Policy DirectorManolo González-Estay leads TransForm’s efforts to influence transportation policy and funding decisions in the Bay Area, including the region's first Sustainable Communities Strategy under SB 375. Before joining TransForm in August 2011, Manolo gave trainings on public participation and Title VI/civil rights issues as part of the National Transit Institute (NTI). NTI is funded by the Federal Transit Administration to train transportation agencies across the country. Before NTI, Manolo spent nearly 10 years as a transportation consultant and working on political campaigns in Denver, Colorado. This included work on public involvement and environmental justice for one of the new rail corridors in Denver (RTD Fastracks), several statewide initiative campaigns, and teaching Spanish to now-President Obama. Manolo has a Master's degree in Anthropology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Born and raised in California to Chilean parents, Manolo was excited to return to California to use his experience with transportation agencies and as a campaigner to win more equitable and sustainable transportation policy. He and his wife enjoy raising their young daughter and two English Bulldogs.

Program AssociateCamille supports the GreenTRIP program and as part of the Great Communities Collaborative runs site campaigns in eastern Contra Costa County to ensure equitable and sustainable development occurs around stations for the proposed eBART line. As an undergraduate, she interned at the non-profit EAH Housing, where her values of social equity intersected with her studies in planning. She received her B.A. in Urban Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. Inspired by her time volunteering in London for a summer, she is excited that her work at TransForm promotes more walkable, transit-rich communities in the Bay Area.

Safe Routes to Schools Site CoordinatorCarrie works in Southern and Eastern Alameda County to help parents and their children make healthy, environmentally-friendly choices about getting to school. She's had previous experience engaging communities in active transportation issues at the East Bay Bicycle Coalition and Urban Ecology. Living by Lake Merritt, Carrie's work commute is almost too short... so she enjoys traveling to schools throughout Alameda County on her bicycle, with a little help from BART. Carrie received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University and an M.S. in Community Development from the University of California at Davis.

Deputy DirectorJeff Hobson is Deputy Director for TransForm. By combining high-quality policy analysis with coalition building and strategic media efforts, TransForm has become a powerful voice for world class transit and walkable communities in the Bay Area and beyond. TransForm's campaigns have helped to raise over $6 billion for sustainable and socially-just transportation and to establish ground-breaking policies linking transportation and land use planning. Jeff leads TransForm's work at the regional and local scales. He has been involved in three previous Regional Transportation Plans (RTPs). He is now leading efforts to influence the current RTP and the region's Sustainable Communities Strategy called for by SB 375, California's ground-breaking climate change law. Jeff helped found and coordinated the Great Communities Collaborative, which brings together a wide variety of stakeholders to help communities plan for neighborhoods near transit. Jeff also helped shape and win voter approval of transportation funding measures in several Bay Area counties, led efforts to win transportation solutions for low-income residents, and authored seven TransForm reports, including the Access Now! guide to transportation decision-making. Before joining TransForm in 1998, Jeff worked on environmental justice and energy efficiency in the private, government, and non-profit sectors. He holds a Master's degree from the Energy and Resources Group at U.C. Berkeley and a Bachelor's degree in physics from Harvard University. Jeff and his partner Kim Seashore enjoy raising two young children and learning to see streets through the eyes of a 10-year-old bicyclist.

TravelChoice Program CoordinatorTamira coordinates TravelChoice, TransForm’s innovative program that encourages Alameda County residents to use alternative forms of transportation and reduce vehicle dependence. Tamira is from Mendocino County, where she worked on public access issues and wrote the feasibility study for 130 miles of California Coastal Trail. Upon moving to the East Bay, Tamira sold her own vehicle and is learning how to master public transportation. Over the past decade, Tamira has worked in the environmental non-profit world throughout northern California and the Caribbean. She holds a Masters Degree in Environment and Community Studies.

Chief Operating OfficerLaura oversees all operations functions, including finance, human resources, IT, contracts and risk management. She has more than 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, including a long tenure with the American Lung Association in California, where she served as both Chief Operating Officer and Acting CEO. She has experience building systems and infrastructure for growing and changing organizations, and brings a background in organizational, staff and board development. Laura lives in Belmont with her husband and daughter, where they enjoy the many trails and parks. She received a Bachelor’s degree in English and Master’s degrees in Public Health and Social Welfare from UC Berkeley.

Safe Routes to School Site CoordinatorTerry is a Site Coordinator for the Safe Routes to Schools program with a focus on Oakland. He joined TransForm to help improve the well-being of communities, with a particular interest in educating low-income communities about the importance of active living plus helping students achieve their best personal and academic potential. He is a native Spanish bilingual and bicultural public policy/relations professional specializing in urban and social policy, public affairs, and social marketing with the Latino community in the U.S. Terry is originally from Mexico and has lived in the East Bay for over two decades. He holds a Master of International Affairs Degree in Urban and Social Policy from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies from U.C. Berkeley.

Safe Routes to Schools Site CoordinatorAiyana is a Site Coordinator for the Safe Routes to Schools program in San Leandro, Hayward and the Unincorporated Areas Alameda County. Most recently, Aiyana worked for the Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs' Activities League as the Program Coordinator for their youth leadership program, serving middle and high school aged urban youth. She is excited to continue her work in community organizing at TransForm. Aiyana was born and raised in Hayward, and loves to use public transportation to explore the wonders of the Bay Area. She also traveled the world for six years as a flight attendant, visiting 23 countries on five continents. She received her B.A. in Liberal Studies with a focus in Recreation from California State University Hayward.

Program DirectorJohn created TravelChoice, TransForm's innovative one-to-one education program which TransForm has piloted in East Bay communities since 2005. John also oversees TransForm's BART related advocacy, including project advocacy, analysis and outreach regarding the Oakland Airport Connector. John joined TransForm after spending 13 years working in one-to-one and grassroots marketing for the entertainment and trend products industries. He lives in Alameda, where he chaired the City of Alameda's Transportation Commission from 2001 to 2009. Over the past 15 years, John has also worked on transportation issues in New York City and San Francisco, including NYC's Transportation Alternatives, Alameda Transit Advocates, and BikeAlameda.

High School Coordinator, Safe Routes to SchoolsAlissa serves as High School Coordinator for our Safe Routes to School program in Alameda County. She brings a great deal of experience engaging young people in planning and policymaking locally, regionally, and nationally. In 2006, Alissa co-founded the Young Planners Network – a national network of youth and adults engaged in urban planning. During this time, she also worked with the Center for Cities & Schools at UC Berkeley, assisting with the development of the Y-PLAN (Youth – Plan, Learn, Act, Now!) curriculum. After graduate school, Alissa spent several years with the California Center for Civic Participation, serving as technical assistance for youth engagement with the Kellogg Food & Fitness Initiative. Originally from New York City, Alissa has been a proud Oakland resident for the last five years. She is excited to work for TransForm, in the heart of the city she loves so much. In 2008, Alissa received her Masters of City Planning degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

Director of FinanceKaren oversees all of the financial and administrative functions of TransForm. Karen brings extensive administrative and financial management experience to TransForm from the public, private and non-profit sectors. She has overseen a number of accounting software conversions for non-profit entities. She has more than ten years consulting experience as the fiscal manager on a number of federally funded contracts. She also was the project manager on the acquisition and rehabilitation of an apartment complex for low-income individuals in North Oakland. Karen delights in the fact that she can walk to TransForm from her home each day!

Community Planner, Silicon ValleyChris is engaging community and business leaders, elected officials, and the broader community in shaping the planning of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service in Santa Clara County, where he has lived for over 20 years. Chris is also helping to connect Santa Clara County stakeholders to regional, state, and federal campaigns for public transit funding, and he's working to ensure that Santa Clara County's portion of the Sustainable Communities Strategy (SCS) meets environmental, equity, and public health objectives. Chris has worked on environmental and social justice issues for over a decade through his work as an instructor at De Anza College and San Jose State University (SJSU) and as a community organizer in the South Bay. Chris' previous work with TransForm includes coordinating a community-based input process for the Mayfair neighborhood in San Jose (see the report) and organizing the campaign to stop VTA's proposed fare increases in 2003. Chris also translated TransForm's Access Now! guide from English to Spanish. Chris received his BA in Environmental Studies with a minor in Latin American/Latino Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz and his Masters in Urban Planning at San Jose State University.

Communications and Development AssistantJessica supports a wide range of communications and development activities at TransForm, from web content and the database to individual donors and events. Jessica recently moved to San Francisco and can’t get enough of the freedom that she has gained from being able to live almost entirely car-free. When she’s not working at TransForm, she can be found organizing volunteer events across the Bay Area or exploring the city, usually on foot, in search of the best veggie burrito. Jessica has a background in communications and event planning and received her BA in journalism from the University of Oregon.

Communications DirectorMarta oversees TransForm's overall communications, marketing, and media efforts. Prior to TransForm, Marta worked for several environmental organizations and in politics. She has a Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and a BA in environmental science and policy from Drake University. When she's not at the Inner Sunset farmer's market discovering new vegetables, riding the N-Judah downtown, or running in Golden Gate Park, Marta can often be found at Point Reyes National Seashore where she is a wildlife docent with her husband.

Development DirectorSara oversees TransForm's fundraising efforts. For the past eleven years, Sara been deeply involved with many Bay Area environmental nonprofit organizations, with significant experience in fundraising, program and financial management, communications, and outreach. Most recently, she was the executive director for the Friends of Sausal Creek, an Oakland-based watershed group focused on environmental education and restoration, where she led several strategic efforts including a state-funded science-based watershed plan. Sara has written for magazines such as Leadership and Bay Nature, as well as for the Sierra Club Books publication Ecological Literacy: Educating Our Children for a Sustainable World. Sara and her husband love raising two young children and three chickens, and spend time exploring their community via bike, bus, train, and foot. Sara holds a Masters in Geography and Human Environmental Studies from San Francisco State University and a B.A. in both Political Science and Philosophy from Boston College.

Office ManagerSara oversees human resources, office technology, accounting, and other general office management duties. She previously worked with TransForm's TravelChoice program as a canvasser and Program Associate. Shortly before becoming involved with TransForm, she relocated to the Bay Area from North Carolina where she received her B.A. in Sociology and Political Science at Guilford College. She is an avid bicycle rider and advocate, participating in many grassroots efforts to increase bicycle and pedestrian access within her various communities.

Joél is currently working with the Great Communities Collaborative on several TOD planning processes, and is helping to maximize community involvement and build awareness and support for Bus Rapid Transit in the East Bay. He has also been appointed to serve on the East Oakland Building Healthy Communities Steering Committee and the Alameda County Transportation Commission's Community Advisory Working Group. All of his planning work is and has been deeply rooted in transportation and social justice principles. Joél's own family was transit dependent while he was growing up. Those childhood memories and his professional experience working in diverse, low-income communities strongly reinforce his commitment to his work.

California Field Organizer, Transportation For America CampaignShannon coordinates the Transportation For America campaign's partner organizations in California. These partners (including TransForm) are working together to win federal transportation policy that actively supports a nation of world-class public transportation and neighborhoods that require less driving - all while keeping our current transportation infrastructure in great shape. Shannon has worked for nearly a decade in California as a community organizer on issues ranging from forest protection to economic democracy. She has also served in communications, development, and management roles at various organizations in the Bay Area and Humboldt County. Shannon has never owned a car and enjoys her quick bike commute from Lake Merritt to TransForm's downtown Oakland office. She participates in people-powered transportation on land and sea as a hiker, cyclist, swimmer, and rower. Shannon is originally from the northeast and holds a B.A. from Harvard University and an M.S. in Environmental Education from Lesley University.

Accounting AssociateEbonie supports a wide range of TransForm's work in her administrative role. She brings extensive administrative experience, having previously worked for accounting and marketing firms. She is happy to be out of the for-profit realm and proud to be working to make positive sustainable change. Originally from Los Angeles County, Ebonie relocated to the Bay Area eight years ago to live in an environment more in line with her green and relatively car-free lifestyle.
