Holy Crap!

OK, I swear I am really excited to do the car free challenge, but I am also terrified.  Los Angeles is notorious for having lousy public transit and for being spread out!  LA invented gas guzzling!  BUT, I am so inspired by all the people who have pledged do go ZERO miles in a car for June!  That is awesome.  I set my goal as 300 a month.  So, that's 10 miles a day on average.  The thing is: I'm an actress.  So, I have auditions all over town, and I can't exactly ride my bike to them and show up all sweaty (although I should encourage my agents to only submit me for sweaty roles... that could help).  So this could be an unmitigated disaster.  OR A TRIUMPH!Laughing

Well, I better start studying the bus map... and I think maybe I will befriend my neighbors... cause a lot of my friends live on the west side!

Wish me luck!

You can definitely do

You can definitely do car-free in LA. In many ways it has one of the best public transit systems in the state. I lived in LA for two years and biked or took the bus 10 miles (one-way) to UCLA from Koreatown several times a week. Check out metro.net for schedules, consider combining biking with transit, and buy a day pass (or a monthly pass--even better). Good luck!!

I am totally wishing you

I am totally wishing you luck because you have taken on MUCH more of a challenge than those of us in the Bay Area. But this will be great -- you can point out the obstacles -- and the good things -- about LA's system. There's also a nonprofit that works on transit issues down south: http://www.socata.net/infocenter.html.

I sympathize with you. I

I sympathize with you. I REALLY don't want to move to LA, but I'm a newly graduated nurse, and looking for work. Did you know The Bay Area has no nursing shortage? True story. So, I've pledged to drive 0 miles in June and I have two interviews lined up in LA. I'm thinking of taking Amtrak and then riding my bike to interviews. The tough part will be keeping my suit from getting too sweaty and wrinkled. At least it will make for a great interview story. All the best with your challenge! I think you'll do great. If anything it will make you more aware of how lousy LA's transit system is and inspire you to advocate for its improvements.
