Off to a slow but 100% car-free start!

I live too close to my job! The best part of my day used to be the morning commute, back when my apartment was about three miles from my KPFA's radio station in Berkeley, where I work three days a week.

After breakfast, I would strap on my big-wheeled inline speed skates, push my way along the bike boulevard on Hillegass, zip down the big hill on Bancroft and on towards the radio station. Twelve glorious, uninterrupted minutes with nothing to worry about by the wheels under my feet and the wind in my hair. And after the stress of a day in the newsroom, the commute home was always a great way to decompress.

But now, I live just two blocks away from work, so no longer do I even get my heart rate elevated getting to the station! Luckily, my skates and I got in some fun time together as the Car-Free Challenge began, plus I made a grocery run across town tonight, with a fat sack of food on my back to mess up my skater-balance.

Much more skating miles to come in the days ahead, and possibly some bike miles as I'm considering cycling the 47 miles from my home to the Napa Valley Inline Skate Marathon on Sunday. Stay tuned!
