Post a comment on this blog telling me your favorite transit-themed songs to be entered into a raffle for tickets to Greenbelt Alliance's Bluegrass festival this Sunday in Oakland.  One song gets you one entry, so the more songs you suggest, the more likely that you will win.  The songs you suggest will be used to make a playlist to liven up the scene at our three Sports Basement patries.

For power ballads, we have to start with Jefferson Starship's We Built This City (The greatest Urban Planning song of all time) and then move on to Journey's Don't Stop Believing (Took a Midnight Train Going Anywhere).

transit themed songs that

transit themed songs that run circles through my head while I'm biking are:

1. Tom Petty; runnin' down a dream

2. that really amazing/annoying bike song that kept playing at TransForm's summit and consequently repeated in my head every time I got on my bike for the next two weeks that goes like this; "BI-cycle, BI-cycle, I want to ride my bike!" remember that one?

3. Carl Perkins; I'm walkin' (for when I'm not on my bike)

3. Puff the magic dragon (I don't know why, but it's a fun, playful song and my bike is also a dragon, so I think it counts...) :)

I have to say that since I

I have to say that since I received the car-free song assignment, I've had "Bus or Beer" by The Poem Adept in my head, which you can listen to on their MySpace page. Though they're a Michigan band, the song is about the 38-Geary in SF. Another anti-car (more accurately, pro-East Bay and anti-gentrification) song that I like a lot is "Alameda County Line" by Red Meat, a local honky tonk band whose MySpace page unfortunately does not offer this number as a listen. But you can hear "City Slicker" instead, which is a fun song that I find particularly dear these days after relocating from Humboldt County to Oakland. =) And finally, I have to re-share the TARC Bike Rack Rap from Tennessee, which will definitely make you want to get your bike and your booty on the bus. All musicians are actual bus drivers or other transit agency staff!!

I am glad to share that

I am glad to share that during the last week I have been immensely inspired by a car-free themed song entitled "On the 1" from the duo Ma Muse: http://www.myspace.com/mamuseic http://www.mamuse.org/home Unfortunately, the music is not available online. Below is a piece of the lyrics. It is a truly beautiful song and a magical duo that rides their bikes to most of their concerts. "I am going to get up and pack up my things Put my faith in a bike that will carry me And ride to the mouth of the ocean I can't do this alone Will you come When I am riding on the 1? And we will draft along Behind a flock of song birds"
