Stuart Cohen, Executive Director of TransForm,
to receive prestigious Irvine Foundation Leadership Award
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 18, 2013
Oakland, CA –TransForm’s Executive Director Stuart Cohen has been named a recipient of the 2013 James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award. Cohen earned this honor for his impact as a champion for innovative regional planning to create affordable, vibrant communities that improve quality of life and help the environment.
“Stuart’s strong regional leadership has truly sparked a shift in the Bay Area when it comes to transportation and community planning,” said Corinne Winter, Chair of TransForm’s Board of Directors and Executive Director of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. “By combining his vision and policy smarts with a commitment to coalition-building, he has led TransForm to win billions of dollars for public transportation, bicycle and pedestrian safety, and livable communities.”
TransForm works to create world-class public transportation and walkable communities in the Bay Area and beyond. Through innovative programs like GreenTRIP, which certifies new housing developments that are designed to rely less on cars, and hard-hitting advocacy campaigns that have made a splash everywhere from local city councils to Washington, D.C., Cohen and his staff of 30 have dedicated themselves to building a movement to redefine transportation in terms of choices, sustainability, and health.
Cohen co-founded TransForm in 1997 working from a small home office for the first two years. The group now has offices in Oakland, Sacramento, and San Jose.
“We are beyond proud to learn of this well-deserved recognition of Stuart’s work,” Winter said of the award. “He is a man with a mission, and the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award will provide critical support for Stuart to build an even stronger movement in the years to come.”
Now in its ninth year, the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Awards recognize and support individuals who are advancing innovative and effective solutions to significant issues in California. Nominees may be working in any field — such as education, health, public safety, economic development or the environment — in the public, private or nonprofit sector.
The Foundation provides each award recipient with $125,000 to support his or her work benefiting the people of California and assists recipients in sharing their promising approaches with policymakers and practitioners in their fields. Cohen will be honored along with the other recipients at a formal awards ceremony in Sacramento on February 4, including a presentation to the State Senate.
