TransForm leads a range of programs and partnerships to achieve world-class public transportation and walkable communities in the Bay Area and beyond.
Learn about:
The Great Communities Collaborative: A powerful partnership changing how local land use planning happens across the Bay Area so that communities have a strong role in shaping new development and making the entire region more sustainable.
Safe Routes to Schools Alameda County: A comprehensive program working at dozens of urban schools to increase how many kids walk and bike to school.
ClimatePlan: A powerful partnership working to make California's global warming law yield strong state transportation and land use policies.
TravelChoice: An innovative program inspiring targeted communities to walk, bike, take transit, and carpool more.
GreenTRIP: The Traffic Reduction + Innovative Parking certification program for new residential and mixed use developments that rewards projects that apply strategies that reduce traffic and greenhouse gas emissions.
Safe Routes to Transit: A first-in-the-nation grant program to improve the safety and convenience of walking and bicycling to transit, funded by Regional Measure 2 (the $1 bridge toll increase for transit).
The Safe Routes to Transit (SR2T) Program awards $20 million in grants to facilitate walking and bicycling to regional transit. The program is funded by Regional Measure 2, and is administered by TransForm and the East Bay Bicycle Coalition. By improving the safety and convenience of biking and walking to regional transit, SR2T will give commuters the opportunity to leave their cars at home, and reduce congestion on Bay Area bridges. Learn about the creation of SR2T.
Bicycling and walking are cost-effective and sustainable ways to reach regional transit stations, yet many commuters cite safety as the main reason they drive instead. Safe Routes to Transit (SR2T) promotes bicycling and walking to transit stations by funding projects and plans that make non-motorized feeder trips easier, faster, and safer. Improvements in the safety and convenience of bicycling and walking to regional transit gives commuters the opportunity to leave their cars at home.
To date, approximately $16 million has been awarded to over 40 capital and planning projects.
SR2T funds may be used for:
The final funding cycle will occur in 2013. Frequently asked questions are answered here.
Information for Safe Routes to Transit grantees is available here.
The program is run by staff members from TransForm and the East Bay Bicycle Coalition:

Safe Routes to Transit grant applications for Cycle IV were due on August 8, 2011. We received great response to the call for projects and look forward to awarding funds to great projects that will make it easier and safer to walk and bike to transit throughout the Bay Area Region. For more information on the timeline for this fourth set of awards, see below.
Eligibility
Public agencies from the nine Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma) are eligible to apply. Capital and planning projects are eligible, but operations and maintenance projects are not. To be eligible, a project must facilitate walking or bicycling to existing transit services, thereby increasing ridership on a regional transit system. Please see the FAQs for a detailed statement about eligibility.
Funding Available
$4 million will be available for the 9-County Bay Area region for programming in Cycle IV (2011). This is the fourth of five (5) funding cycles that will take place during the ten year program, with funding cycles occurring every two years. Awards are competitive.

The $22.5 million Safe Routes to Transit (SR2T) Program received Bay Area voter approval in March 2004 through Regional Measure 2, the $1 bridge toll increase for transit. Of the SR2T funds, $2.5 million are allocated directly to City CarShare projects (with $750,000 already encumbered) and the remaining $20 million will be allocated on a competitive grant basis.
To be eligible, projects must have a "bridge nexus," that is, reduce congestion on one or more state toll bridges by facilitating walking or bicycling to regional transit services. "Regional transit service" is essentially transit that serves trips between counties. To satisfy the nexus, the transit service associated with a proposed project must connect with, cross, or provide the same geographic connection as a state-owned Bay Area bridge, or provide direct access to regional transit.
Regional Measure 2 named the East Bay Bicycle Coalition (EBBC) and TransForm as joint project sponsors, with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) serving as the lead public agency co-sponsor for fund allocation purposes.
This list was approved by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission on December 21, 2011.
