Two New Visions for Pittsburg

Pittsburg Bay Point Master Plan

City of Pittsburg Adopts Master Plan!

In August 2011, the City adopted a Master Plan for the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART Station. When eBART comes, this station will transition from being an end-of-the-line station to a transfer station for the service. The final plan envisions a mix of up to 1,200 housing units and 130,000 square feet of retail for the 50 acres near the station that is currently surface parking and vacant land. TransForm and La Clinica de la Raza partnered to win parking maximums on the BART-owned property, bilingual wayfinding signs, and generous long- and short-term bicycle parking standards. While there were these excellent elements in the plan, we are disappointed to see its walkability and connectivity compromised by a lack of direct public access to the Oak Hills Shopping Center to the east and through the private development on the western portion of the master plan area.

In Fall 2009, the City of Pittsburg adopted a Specific Plan for the area within a half-mile radius of the future Railroad Avenue Station at the intersection of Railroad Ave and Hwy 4. Railroad Avenue will be the second station along the 10-mile BART extension, known as eBART, from Pittsburg/Bay Point to Antioch. This plan is the culmination of years of work by TransForm, Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Community Organization (CCISCO), La Clinica, and more. It will create a new, vibrant neighborhood with jobs, shops, and homes affordable to families at a range of incomes -- instead of grid locked commutes and unaffordable mortgages.

Combined, the vision laid out in these two plans will create new, walkable communities that are safer, more affordable, and better for the environment.
