An Initial Focus on San Jose and Oakland
Great things are happening in cities around the Bay Area and California, from new developments that eliminate excess parking in favor of bike and car sharing, to innovative public transportation solutions, like Bus Rapid Transit.
If scaled up, these solutions can make our cities more wonderful and affordable places to live, while reducing our impact on the climate.
That’s why TransForm is launching the Innovative Cities Project. We plan to first focus on San Jose and Oakland. Rapid growth is bringing both challenges and opportunities to these cities, and TransForm has long had offices in both.
San Jose is at the heart of Silicon Valley and has the potential to be a national leader in transportation innovation and new urbanism. Oakland is a wonderfully diverse city on the verge of a boom. But as rents skyrocket, displacement of existing residents and local businesses poses a tremendous threat to the city’s social fabric.
We want these cities become leaders in innovative transportation and bringing new development to life without displacing existing residents and local businesses. We are partnering with local leaders and organizations to bring the most promising solutions like bike share and peer-to-peer car share to a city-wide scale.
