The following is a statement from Joël Ramos, Regional Policy Director at TransForm on the Safe Transit proposal being considered by BART's Board of Directors at the meeting currently in session.
"Safety on transit means more than just protection from crime. For us, 'safety' also means protection from discriminatory policies and over-policing of Black and Brown bodies. True safety is not just lacking for immigrants on transit, but for communities of color who are routinely profiled, harassed, threatened, or sometimes much worse, by transit police. When everyone feels comfortable on transit, we all win. None of us should feel threatened when we see uniformed officers board a transit vehicle, and the Safe Transit policy introduced by BART Directors Lateefah Simon and Nick Josefowitz will make immigrant communities and all transit riders safer. It's a step in the right direction, but more is needed to make transit truly safe for people of color."
