Biking integrates a lot of my values and needs:
As a diabetic: I need the excercise
As a mom: I want my son to buck the trends and live longer and healthier then the generation before him instead of being a part of the first US generation not to!
As a environemntalist: I cannot abide by the idea that my comfort outweighs the impacts I have on others and our ecosystem and I am increasingly not very comfortable in a car. Freeriders and externalities are my top pet peeves, oh and sitting in traffic.
As a planner: I too often hear neighbors say a development needs to accomodate more cars - why not demand the development needs to accomodate and facilitate alternatives to using a car? I love seeing a picture of a horse in NYC in 1910 and thinking about how in 2010 , just like in 1910, we have no idea what our primary mode of transportation will be in 100 years, In 1910 folks simply could not image NYC with curb to curb cars. Further to assume combustion engine cars, the one mode we know most certainly is running out of its fuel source, will be what we continue to rely on, is, well, a little absurd. Kinda like riding a horse through Manhattan would be today.
