The urgency to reduce our mileage has never been greater. World Class Public Transportation and vibrant walkable communities are key strategies for solving our biggest problems -- from obesity to climate change, from traffic congestion to the financial strain of excessive infrastructure.
And right now, California is putting in place a groundbreaking new law will set greenhouse gas reduction targets for transportation -- by June 30 there will be draft targets for each of the 18 major regions in the State. The regions will then develop transportation, land use, and housing plans to make it easier to drive less. Already other states are looking to California’s example.
By joining together in this CarFree Challenge we are essentially signaling a new era -- that we want investments that will make it easy to drive less, get more exercise and spend less time in congestion. As a member of the committee appointed by the California Air Resources Board to help them determine these regional targets I will take this inspiring message directly to Sacramento.
If this movement takes off we won't just have wonderful walkable communities and more open space -- I truly believe that in under a generation we would fight fewer oil wars, have fewer devastating oil spills, inhale fewer particulates into our lungs, and, not have to explain to our grandkids why there are no more glaciers in Glacier National Park.
