Tell Your Congress Members to Defend Bike/Ped & Transit Funding

Federal Transportation Funding

Thanks to Senator Boxer’s leadership, the Senate draft of the federal transportation bill is pretty strong.

But now, the House of Representatives has released their version of the federal transportation bill.  And it is very, very bad.  It includes the elimination of dedicated bike/ped infrastructure funding and proposes drilling off the California coast.

In the most shocking move yet, House Ways and Means Committee members have proposed eliminating guaranteed funding for the Mass Transit Account and forcing transit to go begging before Congress for general funds each year. Things have never looked quite this dire.

Email your Congress members now to defend full funding for transit and dedicated bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure funding in the bill.

We also want Congress to support a policy that would require minimum safety standards for roads to maximize safety not just for cars, but those on foot and bicycle.  If the policy gets support through the passage of the bill, the U.S. Department of Transportation would work with states to develop standards to ensure that any transportation project built with federal funds provides safe and adequate accommodation for both motorized *and* non-motorized users.  This would be a huge step forward for federal transportation policy!
