For nearly a year, Congress has dithered over legislation to keep our roads, bridges and transit systems in safe, working order and to address our frustration with arduous commutes, unreliable public transportation and our desire to kick the oil habit.
Now the Senate is finally taking their very first steps to craft their version of a new transportation bill.
Senator Boxer is at the helm of the powerful Environment and Public Works Committee that is writing the bill- and you must let her know that California needs a cutting-edge transportation system that reduces our dependence on oil.
High speed trains, repaired bridges and roads, more reliable and convenient public transit, safe streets for walking and biking... these are just some of the important projects that could get a big boost from a visionary bill - if that's what we get.
What we don't want to see is more of the same wasted opportunities and inefficient policies that keep us addicted to oil, stuck with expensive, long commutes and without viable transportation options. I know you don't want that either.
This legislation can be a turning point for California’s economy, bringing jobs and mobility to our state just when we need it most. But if we don't speak up, we'll be left with a bill that reflects the interests of the most moneyed and powerful on Capitol Hill.
