James Perez

Safe Routes to Schools High School Manager

James serves as the High School Manager for the Safe Routes to Schools program. James builds and develops partnerships with youth and community leaders to promote shared and active transportation. He will be developing existing partnerships with Safe Routes High Schools and assist with the program’s expansion to new schools in Alameda County. James firmly believes in having the youth as active players in the effort to improve the educational and built environment in their communities, and is excited to see the Safe Routes programming evolve during his time here.

James brings with him ample experience working throughout the educational pipeline on and off-campus. As a student at UC Berkeley, he was the Executive Director the Pilipinx Academic Student Services (PASS), a recruitment and retention center seeking to improve access to higher education and the holistic wellness for Filipino students and other communities of color. While at Berkeley he gained experience working in capital planning, building operations, and site assessment for a massive campus redevelopment project for the new student union.

He is a recent graduate of UC Berkeley, where he double majored in Urban Studies and Public Health. James is a proud native of Hayward, so much so that he moved back after college. When he isn’t planning for his path to graduate school, James enjoys spending his day playing with his 2-year old Coton du Tulear pup who is aptly named “Cotton”, or rooting for his Cal and Bay Area sports teams.
