Opening: Transportation Policy Advocate

We are seeking a full-time Transportation Policy Advocate to advance racial and economic justice through climate-friendly transportation planning and investments in the Bay Area. This role will lead TransForm’s transportation advocacy and partner engagement, working closely with community groups and advocates to lift up their transportation priorities throughout the region. They will lead our work on the Voices for Public Transportation Coalition, working to pass a new regional transportation measure that supports public transit, walking, and biking in the Bay Area.

This is a hybrid office/work-from-home position, with staff currently expected to work from our downtown Oakland office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Regional Policy and Planning

  • Research and track equitable transportation policy to provide analysis, information, and recommendations that shape the direction of TransForm’s advocacy. 

  • Advance racial and economic justice by providing written and verbal comments on key transportation decisions at MTC and transit agency board meetings.

  • Represent TransForm on MTC’s Network Management Customer Advisory Group.


  • Mobilize other organizations and elected officials around policies, planning processes and investments that support public and active transportation investments that prioritize equity, access, and lower GHG emissions.

  • Draft blogs, slides, and talking points to support TransForm’s campaigns.

  • Staff meetings with local and regional transportation staff and elected officials to advance equitable, sustainable transportation policy.

Partnerships and Coalition Building

  • Cultivate transformative relationships with community partners and environmental, transportation, and equity groups to inform and advance TransForm’s policy goals.

  • Lead TransForm’s local and regional coalition-building efforts—including Voices for Public Transportation—to pass a regional transportation measure. 

  • Work closely with local community groups and advocates to build capacity and support local transit priorities throughout the Bay Area.


  • A commitment to advance racial and economic justice through transportation. 

  • Strong relationship and consensus-building skills and a desire to foster deep, collaborative partnerships.

  • Entrepreneurial, can-do attitude focused on problem-solving.

  • Excellent communication skills as demonstrated by effective clear speaking and writing and ability to tailor complex information for diverse audiences.

  • The ability to synthesize complicated government processes into advocacy opportunities, including developing talking points, slide presentations, and actionable timelines. 

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in organizing, coalition building, and advocacy. A Master’s degree in a related field is substitutable for 2 years of professional experience. 

  • Flexibility to attend occasional evening and weekend events as necessary.

  • Proficiency in Google Suite (i.e., Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Slides, and Documents). 


Great to also have: 

  • Work or lived experience within underserved or marginalized communities. 

  • Experience working with organizations that center racial and economic justice in their work.

  • Existing relationships with Bay Area community groups, advocates, and policymakers.

  • 2+ years of additional experience working in transportation advocacy or policy. 



This is a full-time, exempt position. The estimated salary range is $70,000-$90,000/year, depending on experience and qualifications. Applicants expecting the top salary range should have all the skills listed under “Great to also have.”
